The Staff Trainer is a free flash-recall game for learning to sight-read music notation. A note appears on the treble or bass staff, the staff blanks after a moment, and you answer from memory. That forced recall — reading the note before it vanishes rather than working it out at leisure — is what builds the instant recognition that fluent sight-reading depends on.
Eleven stages progress from single notes on the treble staff through ledger lines, bass clef, mixed clefs, sharp and flat key signatures, and finally multi-note cards and chord naming. Clear twenty cards in a row to advance a stage; miss one and you stay where you are while the timing gradually tightens. Presets from Chill to Freak set the pace, or dial in your own question and answer windows in milliseconds.
Answers can be given three ways: on-screen note buttons, your device keyboard, or a clickable piano. Progress, best streaks and settings are stored in your browser only — there is no account and nothing is uploaded. Part of the Enodo songwriting tools.
Use it as daily note-reading practice alongside an instrument: five minutes of flashcards before piano, guitar or vocal work keeps treble and bass clef note names sharp. Because levels advance only on a 20-streak, the trainer naturally spends the most time on whichever notes you actually confuse — ledger lines above the staff, the bass clef spaces, or enharmonic key signatures.
Is this suitable for complete beginners? Yes — Stage 1 uses only the treble staff with generous timing, and the Chill preset slows everything further.

Why does the note disappear? Hiding the staff forces recall instead of slow decoding. Spaced, timed retrieval is one of the most reliable ways to make note names automatic.
Can I practise bass clef only? Yes — pick Stage 3 (Bass) or Stage 4 (Bass + ledger) directly from the stage list; you don't have to start at Stage 1.
Does it work on a phone? Yes. The on-screen keys and piano input are touch-friendly, and settings persist on your device.
